This has been in the works for a very long time. Finally, I am announcing a bootcamp for photographers like none you’ve ever attended. This is not about how to take pictures. It is not about how to make people smile. It is a bootcamp all about you – the photographer. This bootcamp is designed to give new photographers a leg up on the road to success, and to breath life into the seasoned photographer’s business where merging creativity with profit seems like a pipe dream.

Lifestyle Photography Time Again
It is Lifestyle Photography time again! Back by popular demand, our 3 instructor workshop is here and registration is open.
Join our team on Sunday, July 7th, as we help you learn how to pose and light your subject, as well as how to interact with your clients. The heart of lifestyle photography is in the candid look of your photos as well as in the atmosphere you create. The idea is to capture regular people doing regular things, and especially interacting with each other. This does not mean follow your subject around snapping random pictures of whatever they happen to be doing. Much of “lifestyle” photography is posed in a way that makes it look natural. Since the average person is not a model, we have to take a much more hands-on approach when directing and posing them so as to achieve the result we are after. For this workshop we will have actual families for you to photograph, not models, so that you can get real world experience.
- Learn all about interacting with people, from local photographer Anita Chapman – Perfect Moments Photography. Let her give you some tips and tricks she uses when photographing families. Learn how to deal with men who don’t want to be there, kids who won’t sit still, and clients whose ideas do not provide the ideal photo for you. Families are what Anita does best, so come join her for some posing fun as she helps you figure out the best angle for your shot .
- I will be there to help with composing your photo, and to make sure you get your exposure bang on! Since I love the technical aspects of a photo, I will help you to see things from a different perspective, and possibly challenge you to think outside the box. I will aim to help you choose the ideal location for your photo, or to work within the confines of the location you are given.
- Ted will float between the two of us, answering questions and helping with technical challenges as well. He will give you some ideas for lighting your subjects so that you can make them stand out no matter what the day looks like!
Here are some photos from students and instructors in one of our past lifestyle workshops. Don’t miss out on the fun!
This workshop will run rain or shine. Photographers need to work around the weather that is available, so we will give you ideas on how to work in any weather. Bring along your camera with empty cards and batteries charged. Reflectors, ND filters, lens hoods, external flashes, and even tripods may enhance your experience. Registration is limited and filling up quickly, so be sure to secure your spot now – there are only a few days left!
Night Photography Class Anyone???
So I realize that I have slacked a bit on blogging for my own photography page lately, but the reason is two-fold. One – I was waiting for my awesome new laptop to arrive, which I was able to pick up on my way to Texas last week YAY!!!) and Two – I have been putting all my blogging brain cells into creating content for the blog at Omnilargess. We have expanded our team, and we are all very excited about all the new classes we are able to offer. Each one of us has a different specialty to add to the mix. Check out our Current Classes to see what you can be a part of RIGHT NOW!
This week, we are offering a Night Scene Photography class. This is sure to be a lot of fun. Learn about how to control your settings to get the effect you want in low light. We’ll be pulling out all the cool accessories – reflectors, flashes, grids, tripods, flashlights for light painting, you name it! This workshop is one we cannot have year round because of the temperature versus the time the sun goes down, so make sure you take advantage of this unique opportunity!
New Direction for a New Year
Things are changing slowly around here as I redefine the direction and focus of my business. I have started with a newly designed logo, thanks to Dina Polluck, and will continue by incorporating the logo and colours into my website. I am planning a focus on Maternity, Birth, and Babies – since this is really where my passion lies – as well as a LOT more teaching.
Through my classes at UFV, I have learned that I love watching the light bulb go on as people figure out how to manipulate their cameras or lighting, and begin to improve their photography. The same applies to editing. It kills me to see great photographers whose talent is lost behind poor editing skills. Please, please learn to harness the power of the technology at your fingertips! Gone are the days of shooting pictures and having someone else do the work for you by processing your film (although I do know a lot of film shooters who continue to produce great images!) Now you need to delve into the digital world and learn about things like colour, layers, masking, and exposure enhancing techniques. If you are a photographer, and you know little about editing (both RAW processing as well as basic image enhancement in Photoshop) – please do yourself a favour by growing your skill set and allowing your talent to shine through – LEARN about editing. Having worked with Photoshop for a good 10 years now, I can say by experience, that there is always something more you can learn about editing. Whether it is tips to make your workflow go faster, or different ways of accomplishing the same effect, or simply learning the new features that are added to the newest versions of the software. You will put yourself a step ahead of the average photographer and be able to make your images stand out.
In addition to camera courses at UFV, I have been focusing on my editing classes with Omnilargess.com We have a new set of editing classes coming up towards the end of February you wont’ want to miss. If these classes don’t work with your schedule, PLEASE contact me for one-on-one opportunities!
There are more changes that I have waiting in the wings for this year, but I’ll highlight them as I am able to accomplish them. Starting now, I will aim to be a better blogger. Yes – I said it. Now I have to back it up. Wish me luck!
Lifestyle Photography 2 : Urban Youth Edition
In the world of photography, every stage of life has its challenges. A daunting time for many photographers is that stage that comes after the tween years, and before the seasoned adult. What do you say? How do you pose them? Will you be cool enough? Trendy enough? Or old and outdated? Will you be able to coax out some real emotion? Yes – even young photographers have these fears. Finally you can put them to rest as Ted, Anita, and I guide you through the process in our Lifestyle Photography 2: Urban Edition workshop.
You can expect a ton of laughs along with some very useful and applicable information. Whether you made it to our first Lifestyle Photography workshop or not, you will not want to miss this one! Because that first workshop was so successful, we wanted to follow it with something along the same lines, but different enough to be a separate class. If you have taken any of our classes before, you know that you will not be disappointed!
The aim of Lifestyle Photography is to capture people in their natural surroundings. To catch them giving “the look” they always do, or the real smile they tried so hard to hide. This time we will be aiming to photograph the younger generation – teens through young adults. We hope to give you some fresh ideas about how you can do this with a little edge and style, while avoiding the “ugly Christmas sweater” category or the painted smiles. Anita, from Perfect Moments Photography, will help to ease the tension between you and your subject and give you posing techniques to catch their best side.
Since Lifestyle Photography involves some technique as well as a great rapport with people, we need to explore this side of things as well. I will be assisting with the placement of your subjects within the big picture by adding some purpose to your shooting with a few tips on composition and camera settings which relate to your location and subject. Then we will look at a few different ways to ensure your lighting is great.
We have chosen evening photography to create some dramatic lighting opportunities, as well as to give us a chance to use our flashes. Ted, from Omnilargess Services, will be assisting you with using fill-flash to enhance your photos, as well as exploring a little off camera flash with those who have applicable equipment. He will also make sure that you are watching your exposure in changing and challenging environments.
We will be having only a short half hour coffee break, so please ensure that you have eaten before the workshop and that your camera (and flash if applicable) batteries are charged. We will have volunteer, non-professional models and tons of hands-on experience to help you apply what you have learned. Equipment that might enhance your experience would be tripods, reflectors, diffusers, ND or Graduated ND filters, lens hoods, polarizing filters, grey cards, and external flashes (though your pop up will do as well).
The class is filling up quickly and spots are limited. August 13, 2012 from 6 – 10pm. With 3 instructors to help you shine, it’s like 3 workshops in one. Don’t let this one pass you by! Register today!
